Armorial Bearings of Spell
Lineage: Spell, the ancestors of this very ancient family held large possessions in the neighborhood of The Forest Knarnesbough, in Yorkshire, and a list of them may be found in the Domesday books as early as the 12th century. Arms were granted to Jeffrey Spell, August 1612, as recorded in the college of arms.
Arms: Quarterly, First Gules, a patronce cross or, fourth, gules, a covered cupor, second, or a dragon rampant gules, third, or a heraldic rose gules.
Crest: In front of a patronce cross gules, a battle axe in pale sable.
Motto: (above crest) In Cruce Vincam (I shall conquer in the cross)
(below shield) De Dieu Trout (From God Everything)
Explanation Of Heraldic Colors: OR (yellow or gold) signifies generosity and elevation of the mind. Gules (red) stands for courage. Sable (black) the tincture sable is from scriptural sources.
Mantling: The scroll like drawing around the shield and helmet is for decorative purposes only.
