What Wondrous Love (Religious Ballad)

What wondrous love is this, oh my soul,
What wondrous love is this, that caused the Lord of bliss
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul, for my soul,
To bear the dreadful curse for my soul.

And when from death I'm free,
I'll sing on, I'll sing on
And when from death I'm free
I'll sing and joyful be
And through eternity I'll sing on, I'll sing on
And through eternity, I'll sing on.

Careless Love

Chorus: Love oh love oh careless love,
Love oh love oh careless love,
Love oh love oh careless love,
See what love has done for me.

1. As on this railroad track I stand,
As on this railroad track I stand,
As on this railroad track I stand,
I'm going to hunt me a railroad man.

Chorus

2. Oh, I love my mom and pappy too,
Oh, I love my mom and pappy too,
Oh, I love my mom and pappy too,
I'm going to leave them now and go with you.

Chorus

When I was Single

Chorus:
When I was single again, again,
When I was single again,
When I was single, my pockets did jungle,
And I wish I was single again.

1. I married me a wife, oh then, oh then,
I married me a wife oh then,
I married me a wife she was the plague of my life,
And I wish I was single again.

2. My wife she died oh, then
My wife she died on, then
My wife she died and I laughed till I cried,
To think I was single again.

3. I married me another oh then, oh then,
I married me another oh then
I married me another,
She's the devil's grandmother,
And I wish I was single again.

4.She beat me, she banged me, Oh then, oh then,
She beat me, she banged me, oh then,
She beat me, she banged me,
I wish I was single again.

5. Young men take warning from this, from this,
Young men take warning from this,
Be good to the first
Be good to the first
For the last is much worse,
And I wish I was single again.

I Love Little Willie

I love little Willie I do, mama,
I love little Willie, ha, ha, ha.
I love little Willie, but don't you tell pa,
For he won't like it, you know mama.

He's asked me to marry him, he has mama
He's asked me to marry him, ha, ha, ha, ha,
He's asked me to marry him, but don't you tell pa,
For he won't like it, you know, mama.

He gave me a ring, he did mama,
He gave me a ring, ha, ha, ha, ha,
He gave me a ring, but don't you don't you tell pa,
For he won't like it, you know mama.

He's gone for the preacher, he has mama
He's gone for the preacher, ha, ha, ha, ha,
He's gone for the preacher, but don't you tell pa,
For he won't like, you know mama.

And now we are married, we are, mama
And now we're married, ha, ha, ha, ha.
And now we're married and you can tell pa
For pa loves Willie like you, mama.

Here are two of my grandmother's recipes that were handed down to her by her mother.

Sweet-Bread Cookies

1 pound flour
1 pound butter
1 cup sugar
2 teaspoons lemon flavor

Work with hands slowly until a stiff dough is formed. Roll in four-inch rolls. Let set to cool. (Chill in ref.) Cut into cookies. Cook in oven at low heat. (300 degrees for 20-25 minutes). Do not brown.

Sweet Potato Pone

Wash sweet potatoes, dry off, trim off roots. Small potatoes can be used. Peel, then grate.

6 cups grated potatoes
a pinch of salt to taste
2 cups flour
2 cups brown sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3 teaspoons grated orange peel
1 cup butter (optional)
1 cup corn meal (optional)

Mix slowly. Will be a little stiff (soft butter helps). Butter small pans for loaves, dust with flour. Bake 1 hour in moderate oven (350 degrees) until slightly brown. Turn out of pan. Serve warm.
