Galway, Ireland

When planning our week-long vacation to Ireland we knew we only had time to stay in a few cities and branch out from there in our rental car. The first city we chose to stay in on our adventure was Galway and it did not disappoint! Galway is the perfect Irish town to get acclimated in. It’s got great restaurants, pretty views, is close to Connemara, Kylemore Abbey, and within a two-hour drive of the Cliffs of Moher. You can book tours to many “must-see” sights that leave directly from Galway throughout the year.

Here are four things we loved during our two-night visit in Galway:

The Latin Quarter

We spent the bulk of our time in the Latin Quarter when we were driving around areas nearby Galway. The Latin Quarter was across the street from our Airbnb and is full of great restaurants, pubs, and places to grab a light dessert. We loved walking these streets during the day and night and it never got too flooded with people.

Beautiful walks

Walking around Galway was a joy. There is a beautiful river that flows directly into the Atlantic Ocean that you can walk alongside up to the cathedral.

Driving distance from “must-see” sights

During our first day in Galway, we hopped in our car and drove the sheep-filled fields and roads to Kylemore Abbey, Connemara National Park, and the Coral Strand. We left after lunch and got back before dinner. It was an awesome getaway. Not to mention, if you are heading south after your stay in Galway, you can go see the Cliffs of Moher. Let me just pause here and say, if the Cliffs of Moher are not on your list of places to see while you are in Ireland. They should be!

We stopped at a fjord for a quick pic around Connemara National Park.

Great restaurants & pubs

If you are nervous about the food you will eat in Ireland, you won’t have to worry in Galway. There are tons of great restaurants and pubs. If you are looking to experience some great traditional Irish music in pubs, you won’t have to look far in Galway.

If you are planning your trip to Ireland, I hope you in Galway during your visit. We absolutely loved it and would encourage anybody to spend 2-3 days in the city and surrounding areas!
